Your Choices for Delivery

Antenatal care whilst you are pregnant will be given primarily by your Community Midwife. In the Lichfield area you have a number of choices as to where to have your baby.  When your midwife meets with you, to complete your booking paper work, you can discuss this further.

Home Delivery

Your Community Midwife will be delighted to support you should you choose a home delivery, which is on offer to low risk pregnancies. Please discuss this with them.

Midwife Bookings at the Samuel Johnson Community Hospital, Lichfield

Your Community Midwife will give you all your antenatal and postnatal care. The Samuel Johnson Community Hospital Midwives will care for you during your labour.

Scans and routine antenatal tests are offered in the normal way at the Samuel Johnson Community Hospital.

The Samuel Johnson Community Hospital is a “low risk” maternity unit where an experienced midwife will deliver your baby. There is no resident doctor at the unit.

The unit is supported by the local General Practitioners but should Consultant care be needed at any stage for yourself or your baby, you will be transferred to Queen’s Hospital, Burton-on-Trent or Good Hope Hospital, Sutton Coldfield (approximately 20 minutes by ambulance.)

Emergency equipment is available at the unit if it is required but if specialist equipment is required transfer will be necessary.

There is no possibility of having an epidural anaesthetic here but the opportunity to transfer to Burton if you need one is available. However, other forms of pain relief and treatment are available, e.g. TENS machine, Entonox, Pethidine, Reflexology and Aromatherapy.

A water birthing pool is also available at the Samuel Johnson Community  Hospital.

Midwife Bookings at Queens Hospital, Burton

This is similar to a Samuel Johnson Community  booking, but your baby will be delivered by a Queens Hospital Midwife on their delivery suite and your scans may be in Burton. An anaesthetist is available at Burton if you require an epidural and then you would be changed to a consultant booking.

Consultant Booking at Queen’s Hospital or Good Hope Hospital

The Consultants at Queen’s Hospital are:

Miss Wendy Oakley, Mrs Katerina Anwar, Mr Tony Roberts, Mr Yosef Ibrahim, Mr Kevin Artley, Mr James Hollingworth, Mrs K Lingham.

Normal deliveries at the units are usually performed by the hospital midwives, but specialist medical care is on hand for mothers and babies who have problems in labour.

The units have modern technology on offer including epidural anaesthetics and monitoring equipment.

Consultant bookings can also be arranged at Walsall, Birmingham, Stafford and Nuneaton.

Before you make your final choice...
